KNIGHTROUSVLOG

JAM was last night…WOW!

This video was shot after the event when the kids were heading outside to get blown off by leaf blowers…you can’t imagine what it looked like while service was going unless you were there.

Balloons and packing peanuts wrecked the entire service from a teaching standpoint, BUT from a fun standpoint it was an A++++! Big thank you to all those who helped man the 14 vacuums required to clean it up.

To all the parent’s, sorry about the Styrofoam in your house this morning.

Finally, here are a few thoughts I wrote to the team last night after the evening was over…

I know all of you could not be here tonight and I would like to tell you that you missed one of the most awesome nights we have ever had…

Todd and Staci did a super job with this service. Travis, myself and the team added some great elements this morning that proved to be unforgettable (the packing peanuts and balloons were a last minute addition)!

WHY was it so good? Because it was a disaster!!!! Yes, a total disaster!!! And I love it!!!! I love that this team will take risks to bring in packing peanuts and spread them out like snow taking 2 hours and 14 vacuums to clean up! I love it that we would pick a puppet guy and totally blow him off his routine to say some of the most interesting things I have heard in our church (good maneuvering Daniel)!!! Can you all believe this stuff! JAM was an utter mess and I love it! I love it that we can try things and fail big. I love it that we can step out by faith and totally trip over our own feet.

Thank you team. Thank you for trying what others would laugh at (JAM). Thank you Todd and Staci for having the vision for JAM!!! Thank you eldership for grinning and bearing it sometimes…thank you for making THE ROCK CHURCH the most surprising place in a kids life.

If only the eldership of my church growing up would have thought like this…if only I had pastors who would have sprayed TP all over me…if only….

Those kids will never forget the day when it snowed in the church!!!

I will never forget listening to Cheyenne lead us in worship! AMAZING!!!

I am laughing with all my heart because it is amazing to lead in a place where risk will happen, innovation will emerge and failure is accepted. SO GO AHEAD and dream, we can always clean it up!

Andy,

Great thoughts! We are still finding the foam and probably will be for the next ten years!!!

You did the absolute best job you could with the atmosphere Jam provided. I felt terrible because it was so difficult…

You are amarvelous “puppet guy.” I appreciated your thoughts, message and brief conversation we had about writing…

See ya down the road.

Pastor Jeff,

Great meeting ya! And – given the wildness of this particular JAM! – I have a feeling each of us will be forever etched in each other’s memories.

Wouldn’t it be great if every gathering in God was this unforgettable?

As I said to you while there, people will see clearly that you guys go all out for kids – even to the point, as you said – to “crazy failure”. I know how you meant that use of “failure”. In truth, you “failed” forward, if you can say you “failed” at all.

Somewhere in the midst of making styrofoam snow angels and spiking balloons, a deposit of Christ was made in the chaos. Okay, so they didn’t have styrofoam when Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey but the contagious, unrestrained craziness of celebration and joy exhibited that day was enough to prompt the religious fuddywhacks of their generation to attack it as unorthodox and inappropriate.

“Knock it off!”, “Shut it down!”, they demanded. As if to say, “God is not honored by such a shameless display.” Christ knew different. “Fellas, even the rocks are eager to bust out,” he assured them.

I’m not sure the “meat” of what I hoped to convey was all that important compared to the “meat” of meeting itself. Kids showed up and were celebrated, embraced, delighted and delighted in, and accepted to a point they will likely, sadly, not experience very often. And, all that, under God’s roof.

Hats off to you and your energetic and crazy gathering!

Andy Holmes, the “puppet guy” you picked up.

I do not feel that fun was all that took place! I felt that it opend doors for people to see how awesome kids and God really are. My 3 y-o daughter and her two friends were excited and talked about the puppets and what was said. One of my neigbors is interested in a churuch who put that much into kids. He wants to come next Sunday.

My daught asked this morning if the puppets were going to be there today. When I told her they weren’t, she floored me with, “That’s okay Jesus is and he is fun!” Thank you to everyone who helpe with the evening!

I remember you saying at some point this year P. Jeff that it was going to be a messy year!!! :-) guess so!

I’m really glad I came across your blog today. I actually had just read the story about your parents (for some reason I don’t recall the accident) and was searching to see if their church still existed. Thank you for sharing about them and the impact they had on you and the community. What a testimony!

Pastor Jeff,

My oldest son, who is 4, had an awesome time at JAM! He loves his class, but having a chance to “worship with grownups” as he put it, was the highlight for him. He was still talking the next day about how it had “snowed” at chuch. :) (God bless the clean-up crew) I love that we have a church that places such a high importance on it’s children, and I was blessed by the worship team, who gave it all they had even for a “kid’s service”. Though obviously geared toward the younger audience, the story about the little seed really touched me. We tend to really over complicate things and get lost in all the day-to-day stuff don’t we? Sometimes we just need things broken down into their simplest form so we can remember what we already know. :) Thanks for all the laughs and for a great time of worship with the whole family! Thanks to everyone who worked on JAM!

Had to write and tell you as we were buckling Gracie into her car seat to drive home that night, she gave a big happy sigh and said, “I’m SO glad I went to church tonight! It was so FUN!” (We had to convince her earlier in the evening that it was going to be fun.)

She’ll remember it for a long time, and associate the joy she felt in running thru the peanuts, making snow angels, chasing balloons, dancing with other kids to the music…all of that will get tied back directly with our church, and with God in her heart. That is invaluable, regardless of the fact that the evening’s intended message didn’t really filter through all of the distractions.

Thanks from us as well for putting on a great family service and for thinking outside the box. :-)

P Jeff,
You are an amazing leader. I’ve never met a leader that would encourage risk like you do. Most leaders only focus on the results which in most cases means “NO” failures. I love the fact that the attitude you teach me to have is to go for it and see what happens (not my caracter), but it make me grow, and think outside my box. Thank You.

Last night was a total blast.

When we got in the car last night after the service Gracie said to me “Dad, I’m so happy we came to church tonight” That’s what is all about. Do you think our kids will remember that night as a disaster? No way. It will probably be ane of their fundest church memories.I’m so blessed to be a part of such an amazing church.

Pastor Jeff,

I think this is AWESOME! I’m sure the kids had more fun than they have ever had in their lives in church. That is something that they will not soon, if ever, forget. I love it! Wish I was there!

I have to tell you, I almost had an anxiety attack last night during JAM! Packing peanuts are a mother’s worst nightmare. My first thought was…Good Lord, who is going to have to clean up this mess? Personally this is something I never let my daughter Jordyn play with because it is such a mess. However, it was the first thing she shared with her dad! Fun stuff for the kids, not so good for the clean up crew. A shout out to everyone who had to clean up! Thank you for making another service memorable!
